Ath, well known for its giants and its fair on the 4th Sunday in August, is also a city of character in the heart of a green region. Its Grand-Place, surrounded by historic buildings, lively terraces and varied shops, is the place to visit. Many people make the trip to do their shopping. There are also historical gems, such as the Burbant Tower built in 1166 and listed as a major heritage site in Wallonia.
Tournai is one of the oldest Gallo-Roman cities in Belgium, along with Arlon and Tongeren. The first capital of the Frankish kingdom, it played an important historical, economic, religious and cultural role in the County of Flanders during the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. If you haven’t had the chance yet, come and admire the oldest belfry in Belgium or the magnificent Romanesque and Gothic cathedral of Tournai, famous for its five towers that earned it the nickname “the city with five bell towers”.
Established in a rural setting, Aubechies is a village representative of the Hainaut architecture of the last century, immersed in a flourishing nature. It is the domain of tiles and red brick, with from time to time a beautiful gable of sandstone rubble… Classified in the Most Beautiful Villages of Wallonia, Aubechies is distinguished in particular by its many listed buildings and character farms: the Saint-Géry church, the old Château de Bruycker, the Bruyère farm, the farmhouse of the Saint-Ghislain abbey… forming a charming and picturesque ensemble.
The construction of the Château d’Attre was commissioned by the Count of Gomegnies in 1752 on the foundations of an old castle. This magnificent neoclassical-style residence, listed as a major heritage site in Wallonia, is one of the rare Belgian castles to have preserved all of its period furniture and decor.
The Municipal Museum of the Fair and Memory will take you back in time with numerous collectibles and activities. The lights, the music, the colours, the magic of the fairground with a carousel dating from the 1920s, a flea circus and its history: fabulous pieces are to be discovered! Manufactured objects, posters, archives and even postcards will make you relive the highlights of Saint-Ghislain life through the ages.
The Iguanodon Museum immerses you in the history of the discovery of the Bernissart iguanodons. This major discovery in the world of paleontology is a fabulous adventure, which will take you room by room to discover the different stages of this discovery up to the centerpiece of the museum: a real fossilized iguanodon skeleton.
The Stambruges Forest offers a wide range of hiking trails, crossing a land rich in legends and stories. In this ancient charcoal forest, the magical and the sacred coexist: fairies, hermits, will-o’-the-wisps coexist with calvaries, chapels and venerated trees. Only the muffled footsteps and whispers of walkers accompany the echo of the Black Woodpecker.
To the south of the forest, the sea of sand or Stambruges sea appears as an old pond of about forty hectares. Submerged two centuries ago, it was once fed by rainwater. This fish-filled body of water was then very popular with migratory ducks. We can imagine that the princes of Lignes, owners of the woods, obtained carp and pike there.
Founded in 1242 by Alix de Rosoit and entrusted to nuns, the hospital operated until the 1980s, then was transformed into a museum. This place is one of the oldest hospitals in Europe, to be discovered absolutely with its thousand facets: baroque chapel, cloister, gardens, sick room, convent… An essential place where care of the soul and care of the body are combined…
A true open-air museum, the Archéosite d’Aubechies showcases the lives of the populations that have succeeded one another in our regions through various reconstructions based on the results of numerous archaeological excavations. Prehistory is illustrated by habitats from the Neolithic period (first farmers – breeders), the Bronze Age and the Iron Age. At the bend of a Gallic house, you can also discover the Gallo-Roman period, represented by a temple, a necropolis, a villa and a barge (flat-bottomed boat).
